Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change – CMCC
This project intends to create the necessary scientific and organisational background for the successful establishment of the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC), a research organization that studies climate variability, its causes and its consequences, using numerical models ranging from Global Earth System to Regional models within the Euro-Mediterranean area.
The CMCC was established in year 2005 under the initiative of the Italian government, through the Ministry of the Environment and Land Protection (MATT), the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), and the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF). A consortium of six Italian research Institutes was entrusted with the responsibility of starting up the Center; this consortium is led by the National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) and is composed by the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM), the University of Lecce (UNILE), the Italian Consortium for Aerospace Research (CIRA), the University of Benevento (UNISANNIO), and the Consorzio Venezia Ricerche (CVR). The Center’s headquarters is located in Lecce.
FEEM develops the socio-economic research of CMCC and provides support to policy making in the negotiations about climate change. FEEM research is structured into 4 intertwined activities: 1) endogenous emission scenarios; 2) translation of physical climate impacts into direct economic impacts; 3) economic assessment of direct and indirect impacts of climate change at the regional and sectoral scale; and 4) implications for mitigation and adaptation policies.
