An Exercise to Assess Research Needs and Policy Choices in Areas of Drought – XEROCHORE
XEROCHORE aims to assist efforts meant to mitigate and to adapt to droughts, and hence reduce the risks they pose in Europe. To this end, XEROCHORE produces a state-of-the-art review and identification of gaps in our understanding of physical processes leading to drought, assessment of impacts, and effectivive policy responses.

To this end, XEROCHORE produces a state-of-the-art review and identification of gaps in our understanding of physical processes leading to drought, assessment of impacts, and effectivive policy responses.
An extended network of associate experts provides inputs for the above roadmap through focussed workshops and round table discussions.
The network of associates consists of over 80 organizations including research institutes, universities, ministries, water management organizations, stakeholders, consultants, international organizations and programmes.
XEROCHORE aims to:
- Provide policy-relevant knowledge about droughts’ physical causes, economic and social impacts and future trends,
- Set out a long term vision on research and pro-active European Drought policy,
- Assist development of drought management plans in connection to the Water Framework Directive,
- Further extend the drought experts’ network established under the auspices of the European Drought Centre (EDC, … link …)
- Initiate permanent platform for research and policy dialog on droughts
FEEM is the Project Coordinator, leader of the WP2 (economic social impacts) and the WP4 (drought-associated policies).
