Eni and its world – because it is a real world – are the subject at the center of Giulio Sapelli’s writings collectively published in this volume. From Enrico Mattei’s postwar commitment to the economic and industrial revival of Italy to the formation of business culture, the books puts together piece by piece the growth and evolution of a leading Italian firm. The volume thus represents a historical document written by someone who was able to experience directly and intensely the corporate culture and values of Eni, which originated with the founder Mattei and which, protracted over time, have still endured today.

Giulio Sapelli has taught Economic History, Political Economy and Organizational Theory at the Universities of Turin, Trieste, Milan and at leading universities in Europe, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand. Since 1975 he has been involved in Eni as a researcher, trainer and board member. He has served on the boards of major industrial and financial companies. He is president of the Manlio and Maria Letizia Germozzi Foundation of Confartigianato and a member of the board of directors of the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei. With Il Mulino, he published “Business Ethics and Values of Justice” (2007) and “In Praise of Small Business” (2013).
