Today we celebrate the 26th Desertification and Drought Day, created in 1995 by United Nations General Assembly. This Day is joined by every country that subscribed the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

During these years more than 70% of natural ecosystems has been transformed by human actions and by 2050 this percentage is going to hit 90%. Moreover, by 2030 food production will be needing further 300 million hectares of cultivable land. Today, more than two billion hectares of productive land are compromised.

These statistics reveal that is necessary a strong protection of a non-renewable resource, the land, both in the developed countries and in the developing ones. Furthermore, the engagement to restrain land consumption corresponds to Goal number 15 of Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030 by United Nations.

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei studies some of the problems connected to land consumption and food sustainability with multidisciplinary focuses in its research programmes.
