RESEARCH PROGRAM: Territory Projects, Basilicata Region

Eni Enrico Mattei Foundation (FEEM) is seeking qualified and motivated researchers with solid experience in one of the following fields:

  • Law and ethics of climate and environmental risks (Type A Candidate)
    OR
  • Data science and modeling for climate risk and natural disaster management (Type B Candidate).

The selected candidate will join the FEEM Team working in Basilicata and on a national and European scale, a research group dedicated to analyzing the connections between the critical local impacts of climate change and socio-economic impacts, and the goals of European climate transition, green, and blue/water policies. Within this team, the candidate will focus on one of the following two project objectives:

  • Type A Candidate: Investigation and research on ethical and jurisdictional issues related to natural disasters and climate impacts (Expected Outcomes 1 and 2 mentioned above).
  • Type B Candidate: Data science, quantitative modeling, and indices to understand, simulate, and project natural risk scenarios and climate challenges with related solutions (Expected Outcomes 3 and 4 mentioned above).

Type of contract
Full-time employment fixed-term contract.

Duration
Indicative 8 months, potentially extendable.

Salary
Competitive (Annual gross salary up to 40.000,00 €), to be defined in relation to the characteristics and skills of the candidate.

Work Location
The selected candidate will be based in Viggiano (Basilicata Region, Italy) [remote work is available for this position].
Participation in internal activities such as seminars, and in international events, conferences, and workshops with stakeholders is also required. As part of their duties, the candidate will finalize research efforts in the form of academic papers, book chapters, or policy reports.

Requirements
To qualify for the position, the candidate must have solid skills:

  • Type A Candidate: Knowledge and experience in legal studies, policies, and law in the field of environmental and climate law, demonstrated by at least a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as law or humanities (with a focus/thesis on topics related to climate, environment, natural resources, risks, etc.). A Ph.D. is not mandatory but highly valued.
  • Type B Candidate: Quantitative skills, demonstrated by at least a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as engineering, earth and environmental sciences, econometrics, statistics, economics, or related disciplines. A Ph.D. is not mandatory but highly valued.

A strong scientific methodological background and motivation are essential, while experience in time series analysis and macroeconomic tools are highly appreciated.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • Experience in geospatial data analysis and mapping (for Type B candidates only);
  • A strong foundation in geospatial analysis and data management, with skills in software such as qGIS, ArcGIS, Matlab, R, or Python (for Type B candidates only);
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams in an international environment, with English as the main working language;
  • Strong commitment to developing research projects and the ability to translate research into applicable indicators and criteria in practice;
  • Basic and/or operational knowledge of Italian (mandatory requirement); a good command of English is also required.
