The achievement of the 2030 Agenda requires a strong commitment from the different spheres of society, from the private to the public sector, from the academia and institutions to civil society and local stakeholders. Developed regions need to focus on decoupling their economic growth from environmental degradation, and on making both their productive capability and their consumption habits more sustainable. Research in this fieId is therefore required to develop integrated approaches that address the interconnected economic, social, and environmental challenges confronting the world. Cities and firms, in particular, are the places where these interactions are most significant and complex.
FEEM research is based on the synergies and trade-offs between economic growth, business innovation and environmental sustainability: it aims at encouraging communities, companies, and public institutions to strictly interact and cooperate to improve human well-being, social cohesion and environmental quality. In particular, the activities of FEEM concern two main pillars: sustainability related to firms and markets, and sustainability related to resilient cities. The first one investigates the climate risks/opportunities management in companies. In collaboration with major firms in the agri-food, insurance, energy, and utilities sectors, it focuses on the identification, valuation, mitigation, and disclosure of the change climate risks. The second pillar refers to the existing relationships between urbanization processes - driven by the changing trends in demography and economy - and results in terms of land uptake, urban patterns, and impact on environment and ecosystem services.
