Financing the energy access in Africa (FEAA)

600 million people lack access to electricity and more than 700 million cook with traditional biomass in Africa, being currently the continent with the higher number of persons without access to clean energy worldwide. Apart from negative consequences on populations and the environment, it deprives the region of an essential input for a sustainable socio-economic development and a necessary prerequisite for poverty reduction. Solutions exit to achieve universal access to clean energy. However, to reach this target substantial additional investments in low-carbon technologies will be required. This research project aims at identifying and analyzing risk mitigation actions and strategies, emanating from the public and private sectors, to increase the flow of investment in clean energy access in Africa.

Main Results and Outputs
  • Mapping of investments required to achieve universal energy access in Africa and analysis of the risks associated with each type of investment.
  • Mapping of capital providers in the public and private sector.
  • Identification and analysis of risk mitigation actions emanating from the public and private sector.
  • Analysis of successes and failures of various study cases, in and outside Africa.
  • Definition of specific recommendations to increase the capital flow in the energy access sector in Africa.
  • Publication of Working Paper FEEM and articles in scientific journals.
