The research will have as general subject the cities and will adopt a multidisciplinary approach, aimed at studying the economic, social and environmental dimensions of the ongoing transition towards resilient and sustainable urban models. The main objective is to focus on the environmental challenges that urban areas will have to face in the years to come, offering feasible and replicable answers. 
In this regard, the concepts of resilience and urban metabolism will be investigated, in theoretical and applicative terms: this will allow to define new interpretative and operational paradigms, consistent with the changes taking place in urban areas, first of all climate change and "circular" proofreading of products and services. 
The theoretical and methodological evolution will operate on several aspects: from the management of natural resources to the limitation of land consumption, from the design of green infrastructures to the protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. 
Urban models will have to be sustainable also in social and economic terms, so the commitment of FEEM and IUAV will be addressed not only to cities in developed countries, but also to developing and transition countries.

The urban demography is changing significantly in developing countries under the pressure of the rural-urban migration. A substantial part of the urban growth of the next thirty years is projected to take place in Africa and Asia, but while the share of Asian urban population is expected to stabilise, that of African will grow steadily.

Based on the experience of the past decades, much of this growth will be concentrated in the capital and some second-tier cities. Although concentrated urbanisation creates opportunities through agglomeration economies and access to jobs and primary services, it also induces social problems related to waste management, water provision , access to sanitation and modern energy, and traffic congestion. The experience of other developing countries shows that, when structural changes in the economy do not follow the rapid urbanisation, this results in wide spatial expansion. This is coupled with the marginalisation of peripheries characterised by a low quality of life, sometimes even lower than in rural areas.

The project aims to investigate how alternative patterns of urban development with varying degrees of spatial concentration contribute to economic development, improvement of social conditions in marginalised areas, and increase of resilience to extreme climate events. Quantitative data analysis, spatially downscaled geographical analysis and articulated case studies will be used. The ultimate goal will be delivering clear-cut policy indications for sustainable planning in Africa.

Current global trends are reshaping the demand for goods with repercussions on the production of primary materials, energy, carbon emissions and waste management. Decoupling economic growth from resource use and environmental impacts is now perceived as a desirable objective, to be achieved through a sensible reduction of the use of primary materials.

The circular economy is a holistic conceptualization of the economy grounding on the recirculation of materials and their more efficient use. Transitioning towards a circular approach is expected to reduce the carbon footprint and waste generation. Depicted as a desirable and sustainable model of production and consumption, its tangible impact is very context and sector-specific and still far from being assessed carefully also due to the lack of available data and information.

This project aims at deepening the knowledge about the state of the art and implementation of the circular economy approach in business models and policies in Europe. It combines the evidence from empirical analysis based on new data, case-study and best practices evidence collected through the participation in the Italian (and European) Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform.

Circular economy in context: a framework and research agenda

Although different conceptualisations of Circular Economy have emerged over the past few years, a clear and unequivocal definition is still to be provided. CEc aims to shed light on this heterogeneity of approaches to derive a clear definition of Circular Economy, linking with parallel concepts like green economy, bioeconomy, sharing economy. Furthermore, CEc’s activities focus on identifying the drivers and the potential role for policies and institutions, current trends and future development prospects, and investigates aspects related to the implementation of new business models and initiatives in Europe and Italy.

The Italian Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform (ICESP)

The objective of the ICESP is to create a network of actors willing to share initiatives, experiences, critical aspects and perspectives related to the implementation of circular approaches in business and economy in general. As a scientific partner with consolidated experience in bridging academic research and policy making, FEEM participates in the platform by capitalising on the collected experiences and information, combining it with scientific knowledge to result in clear-cut policy recommendations.

Although strictly related to many emission sources, urbanisation also provide a favourable context for the adoption of new low carbon technologies in key sectors such as transport, construction and infrastructures. Electric vehicles, low-energy buildings, green infrastructure, ecosystem restoration, sustainable land-use and urban planning, and reduced food wastage are some of the main examples of the large range of options and policy solutions available to make urban transition feasible.

In order to provide knowledge-based policy advice, it is crucial to understand the factors driving the energy and environmental performance of modern cities, and to identify potential trade-offs and synergies among options and policy actions.
The Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) identifies cities and urban areas as one of the four critical global systems that can accelerate and upscale climate action. Cities will be the starting point for behavioural, technological and institutional experiments in the direction of greater sustainability and resilience.
In this perspective, moving from the experience of previous FEEM’s projects such Re-Cities and Ecovalue, CitAge aims to provide new evidences and to contribute to the policy debate on the role of cities in the current transition through more sustainable development models.

This research and outreach project aims at stimulating a debate on the relevance of assessing and disclosing climate-related risks and opportunities and their impact on financial performance, with a particular focus on Italian businesses. Throughout 2017 and 2018, DeRisk-CO developed its research around the Recommendations (on governance, strategy, risk management, metrics and targets) set by the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD) of the Financial Stability Board (FSB), then restated by the European Commission in “Guidelines on non-financial reporting” (2017/C 215/01) related to the 2014/95/EU Directive.

DeRisk-CO aims at helping firms better communicate key climate-related information with reference to scientifically sound scenarios that can help them throughout this process. In particular, the project aims to:
