Firms And Cities Towards Sustainability

Firms And Cities Towards Sustainability (FACTS)

Firms and Cities Towards Sustainability (FACTS) is a research program aimed at understanding and interpreting the current societal changes in response to the challenge of sustainability. It relies on scientifically grounded quantitative and qualitative approaches to answer key questions concerning the transition to a low-carbon and sustainable future. To this end, its main focus will be on the most prominent actors in this transition: firms and cities.

Firms hold a key role in addressing the challenges of climate change. In the coming years, firms that will respond to their stakeholders and define a clear position on values, sustainability, and climate resiliency and adaptation will better navigate the evolving risks and opportunities posed by the low carbon transition. Customers are rewarding firms for their commitment to sustainability, governments are enforcing the objectives of the Paris Agreement, and investors are demanding climate-risk disclosure. Businesses that are capable of innovating and seizing the opportunities derived from the low-carbon transition will be those that secure a sustainable future.

Cities are home to most of the world’s population and through their dynamism are engines of social development and economic growth. However, they are already responsible for a significant share of carbon emissions and their demand for energy continues to grow. As the world attempts to promote a more efficient use of energy resource and deliver global climate targets, it is pivotal that cities take a leading stand in the energy transition.

The activities of the FACTS program concern four specific areas of interest.

Firms, Climate Risk and Business Innovation. FACTS aims at stimulating a debate on the importance of assessing and disclosing climate-related risks and opportunities and their impact on financial performance, with a particular focus on Italian businesses.

Circular Economy. Activities in this area aim at deepening the knowledge about the state of the art and implementation of the circular economy approach in business models and policies in Europe.

Energy Transition and Cities. This area focuses on how the current transition shapes sustainable development models at a city-level from a policy-making standpoint.

Urbanization in Africa. Activities in this area are centered around investigating the effects of urban expansion on sustainable economic growth in Africa’s cities.
