Solutions and Tools for Sustainability

The projects concerning the linkages between the 2030 Agenda and local policies contribute not only to disseminate the culture of sustainable development and to increase the awareness of institutions and civil society in terms of the challenges faced by the 2030 Agenda, but also and mainly to support decision makers in the choice of the most appropriate policies to adopt in each territory. Indeed, by providing quantitative tools such as the City Index and the Index for Provinces and Metropolitan Cities, Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei’s effort is finalized at supporting at empirical and practical level public and private bodies towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Moreover, the projects aims at increasing the awareness concerning sustainable development through education and training cycles, meeting, confrontations and lectures, both in classes and among local administrators.

The program Solutions and Tools for Sustainability will be implemented through seven lines of research:

  • SDGs Portal for Italy: Starting from the results of the City Index, the project aims at presenting the results of the report on cities (Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, 2018) and those of the updated version (Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, 2020) within an online platform – initially created for German local authorities – and thus facilitating the comparison with other European realities;
  • SDGs Portal for Morocco: The project aims at inserting the data for Moroccan cities (as previously occurred for Italian municipalities) within the online platform, thus facilitating the comparison with other European realities;
  • Implementation of the methodology - Bicocca: The project aims at creating an innovative methodology for the analysis of urban sustainability and its following application at local level;
  • Infrastructural hub: The project, in partnership with LATTANZIO (together with AON, Fastweb and Cisco) and in collaboration with the Metropolitan City of Milan, aims at comprehending the meaning and the available tools for the Metropolitan City of Milan/Region of Lombardia in the infrastructural sphere;
  • Summer School on the wellbeing and sustainability of cities: The project consists on a training, structured on both theoretical lessons and practical works, in order to increase participants’ competencies on sustainable development and the wellbeing of urban realities.
  • Summer School for regional administrators: The project is structured on a full-time training over sustainability-related topics, with classroom lessons and practical assignments/teamwork that regional administrators will have to fulfil during the school course;
  • STEP-Sustainable Education Project: The research project aims at implementing the culture of sustainable development through a research applied to a local high school, in order to identify the most appropriate tools to include sustainability within the Italian educational system. The research is based on a qualitative and a quantitative methodology and it is characterized by a bottom up approach including both teachers and students.
Main Results and Outputs

The project aims to:

  • Elaborate tools to promote the 2030 Agenda at local and national scale;
  • Support different actors in the definition of appropriate policies to be adopted in the respective territories;
  • Increase the awareness of communities in terms of sustainability, and to support them in the creation of ideas and practical projects to solve the main global challenges following the indications of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

SDGs Portal for Italy: The data of the City Index (Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, 2018) and of its updated version (Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, 2020) have flowed into the German Platform of the Bertelsmann Foundation, the SDGs-Portal. Through the digital version, it is not only possible to consider the results by city, Goal by Goal, but also to practically view the trend of the territories after years.

SDGs Portal for Morocco: The data for Moroccan cities will be inserted in the German online platform of the Bertelsmann Foundation, the SDGs-Portal, as already occurred for Italian municipalities.

Implementation of the methodology - Bicocca: The project, starting from the data of the City Index (Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, 2018 and 2020) will implement a new innovative methodology, followed by the practical application, for the analysis of urban sustainability.

Infrastructural hub: From the project a Report for the internal use of the Metropolitan City of Milan will be produced, supported by presentations and results of qualitative and quantitative reviews.

Summer School on the wellbeing and sustainability of cities: The participants will attend classes for one week, both at theoretical and practical level thanks to team works and assignments, in order to consolidate their knowledge and skills on sustainability.

Summer School for regional administrators: Regional administrators will follow the classes of the school both at theoretical and practical level, at the end of which they will have consolidated their knowledge and skills concerning sustainability.

STEP-Sustainable Education Project: The pilot project aims at exploring the needs of teachers in order to identify new training tools to insert in the school program. This, providing teachers new didactive tools to stimulate students to become sustainability change makers, elevating the role of teachers to those of change agents, orienting them towards sustainability and proposing them new and innovative teaching methods, while promoting the 2030 Agenda implementation at local level and enforcing the link within the School and between the School and the research.
