Civics: Ghana - Comprehensive and Integrated Country Study: Ghana

With this project, FEEM applies the rationale and methodology of CIVICS to Ghana. Thanks to the expertise developed with the pilot project of Kenya (that now is still ongoing and has become a central project), and thanks to the knowledge acquired about the supply chain analysis of Ghanaian agricultural products strategic for local economy, a modelling framework is developed in partnerships with local stakeholders. Particularly, the energy system of the country is studied in detail and with high spatial resolution, and these data are integrated with results coming from supply chain analysis and macroeconomic models, in order to address the economic, social and environmental impacts of sustainable development plans for the country.

Main Results and Outputs

The first and main result is the multidisciplinary research, theoretical and applied, based on knowledge sharing with local partners, performed with an innovative modelling approach, based on the integration of different tools: supply chain analysis, energy modelling and LCA I/O models. Focusing on local agricultural products analyzed with the supply chain analysis tool, different improving strategies have been identified and their effects have been integrated in the national development plans, with also focus on impacts on national goals and on the alignment with the international sustainable framework (SDGs, etc.). The second result is the empowerment of African stakeholders and communities, thanks to capacity building programs with an inclusive and proactive approach, with organization of workshops and courses to promote ownerships and transfer knowledge about the modelling tools. The last result if the creation of strong and long-lasting partnerships with Ghanaian stakeholders, to enforce FEEM international network.
