Food Impacts Initiative (F2I)

We eat in an interconnected planet. The globalization of markets and the optimization of transport logistics are at the core of the most important processes of cultural contamination of food traditions, which is now a growing problem. 
Food Impacts Initiative (F2I) concentrates on the development of proposals that let emerge the numbers of these new markets, and suggest to various stakeholders circular economy, short-term strategies that might enable the balance between markets and between environmental and social impact. 
In Food Impacts Initiative, food is first approached as an energy product, where production and exchange become variables of (circular) economy models. 
The main objective is contained in a key question: which technologies and best practices allow global and sustainable food markets? 
In the first phase of the project two aspects will be explored: food trade optimization and new local production technologies.

Main Results and Outputs

Future of food trading 
Through Machine Learning models, the F2I data scientist team is working to develop the Trade Impact Index, a market index capable of quantifying the impact of the exchange of each unit of food, in each nation and for every period of the year on a global scale. 
This index aims to become an immediate tool for understanding the work that is required for the planet to supply raw materials and processed food to the shelf and onto plates, and also aims to quantify new best practices. 
Various dissemination activities will be connected to the TII, with the goal of raising consumer-awareness on the impact of their choices and optimizing the choices of companies and organizations.

Future of food production 
An alternative to reducing food trade is the reduction of distances between production and consumption - the idea behind modern models of sustainable and decentralized agricultural production. 
The challenges to achieve sustainable agriculture models and sustainable access to food despite existing technology (including precision agriculture and regenerative agriculture or cellular agriculture) require a relatively long time to be analyzed and verified; a possible path, not in contrast to but to the benefit of the system, can be observed in CEA (Controlled Environments Agricolture). 
In F2I, through academic and industrial partnerships with major international players, impact models will be tested and analyzed for new methodologies and techniques for decentralization of energy production and diversification, the first instance will evaluate vertical farming.
