Growing disparities in multiple dimensions have contributed to feelings of unfairness and discontent. Fairness is always in the eye of the beholder. A widespread perception of unfairness in society can have far-reaching consequences, making it important to investigate the drivers and underlying dynamics of fairness perceptions and inequalities. The flagship report, written before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, analyses some of the most pertinent dimensions of fairness in relation to the agenda for a fair, inclusive and social European Union. The unfolding pandemic strengthens the need to address the challenges underlying widening socio-economic inequalities.

Nicola Pontarollo is Senior Research Associate in FEEM's research cross-cutting area 2030 Agenda which aims to support the new strategic direction of sustainable development defined by the UN on September 15, 2015 by developing innovative research tools to interpret and manage the complexity that characterizes the current socio-economic system.
