Abstract

Growing disparities in multiple dimensions have contributed to feelings of unfairness and discontent. Fairness is always in the eye of the beholder. A widespread perception of unfairness in society can have far-reaching consequences, making it important to investigate the drivers and underlying dynamics of fairness perceptions and inequalities. The flagship report, written before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, analyses some of the most pertinent dimensions of fairness in relation to the agenda for a fair, inclusive and social European Union. The unfolding pandemic strengthens the need to address the challenges underlying widening socio-economic inequalities.
