Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei and Fondazione Giorgio Cini inaugurate the International Center for Climate Governance and start cooperation with Climate Policy Initiative

Venice, 16 April 2010 – Today in Venice at the new headquarters of Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, the Chairman of Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Giovanni Bazoli, the Chairman of Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, Paolo Scaroni and the founder of Climate Policy Initiative, George Soros, presented a new international initiative to encourage dialogue between science and institutions on climate change.

The initiative encompasses different aspects. First of all, Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei and Fondazione Giorgio Cini have founded the International Center for Climate Governance, a joint initiative with the aim of contributing to the study and development of future policies for global climate control. The new Center has been inaugurated today and will focus on the governance issues of climate policies from a multidisciplinary perspective, i.e. socio-economic, cultural and political. It will also analyse the complexity of these issues and will contribute to creating new governances for climate policies. This initiative will leverage on both the extensive and prestigious experience of Fondazione Giorgio Cini in promoting and organising cultural and scientific initiatives and on the knowledge gained by Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei in 20 years of cutting edge – economic research into climate change. In this field Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei – through partnerships, research projects and high-level meetings both in Italy and abroad – has developed a solid knowledge and sophisticated analysis tools in order to develop the best policies for climate control, offering its support to institutions both with regard to mitigation policies and climate change adaptation.

As the secondary focus of the initiative, Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei and the International Center for Climate Governance will today begin an important collaboration with Climate Policy Initiative – a new organisation created to evaluate the effectiveness of energy and climate policies through dialogue with the world of business and finance and with policymakers – and launch the activities for the study in Venice.

This international centre of excellence has been created in Venice as part of the study into policies for the control of climate change. This partnership between Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, International Center of Climate Governance and the Climate Policy Initiative brings together valuable and well-established experience of research into climate science with market knowledge and institutional relations.

After the impasse in the Copenhagen negotiations, in a situation where emerging countries produce a large quantity of emissions to support their economic growth at a low cost, the three organisations involved in this initiative aim to stimulate a greater understanding of energy dynamics and of climate and socio-economic systems, in order to enable policymakers to direct decisions on economic growth towards low emissions options as part of global cooperation.
