Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei contributed to the newly launched interactive portal SDGs Today, a “Global Hub for Real-Time SDG Data” promoted by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).

The portal aims at providing a near-real-time, constantly updated source of data on progress towards the SDGs. FEEM’s contribution is relative to SDG 7, the energy-related goal, and in particularly to the universal electricity access target. The dataset developed by FEEM’s researcher Giacomo Falchetta in collaboration with IIASA measures electricity access from 2015-2019 in sub-Saharan Africa and in 18 additional countries of the world with low access rates, which are featured in the portal. The dataset is generated with a model-based approach from remotely-sensed nighttime light composites from satellite images, land settlement data, and population information. It estimates the variation in the number of people without electricity access in each country featured in the database.

The SDGs Today portal is co-developed with ESRI – the global leading geospatial processing software company – and it is strongly based on the dissemination of geographically-explicit information. FEEM’s contribution to the portal reinforces the long-standing collaboration with the UN-SDSN, of which FEEM is also the official hub for Italy.
