FEEM’s support to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

FEEM has been a significant actor in the climate change debate since its origin. Research activities and a broad international network have allowed FEEM to play an important role in national and international meetings and projects focused on the challenges of climate change.

FEEM has contributed to the negotiations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and has provided scientific support to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 1995.

FEEM plays an active role in international climate negotiations since 2002 by supporting the Italian Delegation based on an agreement with the Italian Ministry of the Environment.

In 2015 FEEM has contributed to the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the IPCC as scientific framework of the XXI Conference of the Parties and to the Report “Climate Change 2014: Mitigation of Climate Change”.

In 2018 three senior researchers of FEEM’s Climate and Sustainable Innovation (CSI) research program have been selected to participate as Lead Authors for the Working Group III contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). The IPCC received 873 nominations with only 226 places available for Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors and Review Editors, and only a few Italian researchers have been selected. Massimo Tavoni, Coordinator of the FEEM’s “Climate and Sustainable Development (CSI)” Research Program, will contribute as a lead author of Chapter 3 on “Mitigation pathways compatible with long term goals”. The aim of the chapter is to define decarbonization strategies which meet different temperature goals. It will heavily rely on the scenarios generated by integrated assessment models, including the scenarios developed at FEEM. Valentina Bosetti will contribute as a lead author of Chapter 1 on “Introduction and Framing”. Elena Verdolini will contribute as a lead author of Chapter 16 on “Innovation, technology development and transfer”.
