The value assigned to a statistical life crucially determines the outcome of cost-benefit analyses aimed to assess environmental, climate, transport and health policies. The FEEM seminar by Stale Navrud, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, will illustrate results from the first global meta-analysis of stated preference surveys of mortality risk valuation, explaining the variation in the estimates of the Value of a Statistical Life (VSL) by differences in characteristics of the survey methodologies applied, the population affected and the characteristics of the mortality risks analysed.
