FEEM Researchers Take Part in the ICID-IFAD Workshop on International Development
On October 26-27, 2017 in Rome, FEEM researchers V. Bosetti and C. Cattaneo will take part in the Italian Centre for International Development (ICID) and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) workshop on international development. The workshop will convene academics and development practitioners to present innovative research on key development challenges, including migration, climate change, rural development and labour market.
V. Bosetti and C. Cattaneo will intervene in the session “Climate Change And Development” with a presentation on “Climate Traps and Civil Unrest“. The paper postulates the existence of two potential mechanisms. First, climate-migrants may trigger new conflicts or fuel existing ones in receiving countries. Second, we test if emigration represents an important adaptation strategy to climate change. We find no evidence of climate-induced migration’s influence on the incidence of civil conflicts in destination countries. While we find support to the hypothesis that migration outflows decrease the probability of unrest in countries where warming increases the risks of civil conflicts.
