The UK Met Office Hadley Centre (MOHC) is one of the world leaders of climate research, with a new programme focused on climate variability, climate change and the biophysical impacts. This talk aims to highlight some recent research that has implications for mitigation issues including:

  • Understanding of climate system thresholds and implications for setting temperature targets
  • Current thinking on climate sensitivity, earth system sensitivity and constraining future climate change
  • Impacts of climate change, including new projections from the AVOID programme

We will also discuss new developments in climate science and how they might affect future mitigation advice. Our work raises questions about the effectiveness of mitigation policy given the complexity of the climate system response which may require a more integrated analysis. We discuss possible examples of a more integrated approach from two current projects between MOHC and FEEM. Based on a work by Laila K. Gohar, Dan Bernie and Jason A. Lowe.
