Abstract

Even under ambitious climate change mitigation scenarios, changes in global and regional temperatures, precipitation and other climate attributes will be unavoidable. These shifts will also trigger changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Energy installations and infrastructure are vulnerable to such events under the current climate. The lecture provides an overview of projected changes in climate and weather extremes, their impacts on components of the energy supply chain and the adaptation options. Depending on energy markets and government regulations, owners and operators frame and assess their adaptation costs and strategies in various ways. This raises several governance issues that affect the safety and reliability of energy supply, economic and environmental integrity of operators and the responsibilities of pertinent government regulators.

Introduced by Carlo Carraro,  President, Ca' Foscari University, Venice - Director, International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG) - Director, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Programme of the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) - Director, Climate Impacts and Policy Division of the Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC).
