Abstract

Achieving universal energy access in Africa requires a multi prong approach that disturbs the status quo and business as usual methods. This disruption is caused by many interrelated factors that are converging to make universal energy access, though a challenging task, achievable in much less time than previously possible. These factors include technological, political and economic changes that are sweeping over the energy world. Innovative business models supported by technological advancements in digitalization through smart metering and mobile payment systems are enabling many rural and remote areas to be electrified through decentralized renewable energy systems. These advancements are expected to cause even more disruption in the energy sector as the continent embraces new concepts such as big data and use of crypto currency thereby creating room for more players, including hitherto non-traditional energy actors. The fast pace of disruptive changes in the sector calls for responsive government, regional and continental policies aligned to present and future realities. Recognising that grid supply alone is neither adequate nor economical as a means of providing access, policy frameworks that support mini-grids and other off grid solutions are needed. In light of the contribution of energy to climate change and its impact on energy generation and energy infrastructure, the transition to sustainable energy is inevitable. Future energy projects must ensure resilience to climate change with less disruption to generation and infrastructure that can withstand the impacts of climate change.
