CliMates is a non-profit international student organisation aiming to research, debate and find innovative solutions in the fight against climate change. CliMates establishes a network of student delegations, each representing one country, which participate in a collaborative and multidisciplinary research process, in order to come up with solutions to be implemented at an international level. Since February 2012 FEEM is part of CliMates expert committee for the periodic revision of the network's publications.

Abstract

The first CliMates International Summit will be held in Paris from October 29th to November 2nd 2012. It will gather CliMates students from all over the world to review and debate one year of collaborative research.

The aim of this event is to elaborate, negotiate and advocate a common student position, putting forward innovative solutions to effectively mitigate and adapt to climate change. These will be formulated in the CliMates Call for Action.

Student delegations, each representing one country, will formulate and express a common student position from a Draft Zero, the current text of negotiation. This text sums up the major themes studied during CliMates’ collaborative research sessions this year, while also taking into account the priority issues of COP 18 in November 2012.
The discussions will be organized into the following themes:
I.A Sectorial Approach to Climate Change
II.Government and Community Actions
III.International Cooperation on Climate Change

The Summit’s main deliverable will be the CliMates Call for Action, the final version of the Draft Zero. It will be both a transcription of tested hypotheses of innovative negotiation and a list of solutions presented by CliMates, partner organizations and experts participating in the negotiation. CliMates intends to present this Call for Action to negotiators of the UNFCCC COP 18, which will be held in Doha, Qatar at the end of 2012. The Call for Action shall also consist in a blueprint for CliMates and its partners’ activity for the following year.

Many academic and professional climate change experts will be present, including Nobel Peace Prize winner and IPCC founder Jean Jouzel, founder of the Institute of Sustainable Development and International Relations, Laurence Tubiana, and philosopher and sociologist and scientific Director at the Institute of Political Studies in Paris, Bruno Latour.

The Summit will be supported by IDDRIand the Office of Academic Research of Sciences Po.
