Position for a junior researcher in Environmental Economics

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) is looking for a qualified and motivated post-degree student to fill a position in the field of environmental economics and policy. The candidate will join the team working in the area of “Firms and Cities Towards Sustainability” (FACTS) a research program aimed at understanding and interpreting the current societal changes in response to the challenge of sustainability. The research aims at answering key questions concerning the transition to a low-carbon and sustainable future, with a focus on the most prominent actors in this transition: firms and cities.

FEEM is a leading research institute on sustainable development and offers an invaluable research environment and an interdisciplinary workplace, with diverse skills and international staff. FEEM has strong ties with a worldwide network of research institutions engaged in environmental research and provide excellent opportunities to focus on research and disseminate results in international conferences and stakeholders’ events.

The selected applicant will be based in Milan (Italy) and will work alongside experienced researchers on topics related to policy analysis in the following main areas of investigation: a) climate change risks and opportunities for firms; b) the role of financial markets in accelerating the energy transition.

The candidate will also be asked to contribute to internal activities and to participate in conferences, workshops, and stakeholders’ event. As part of his/her duties, the candidate will have to finalize the research efforts in scientific articles or similar products (i.e. book chapters, books) but also in nontechnical products for dissemination like policy briefs.

The job assignment is expected to begin in as soon as possible. Gross salary is competitive and will be based on qualification and experience.


A background in quantitative economics, as demonstrated by the achievement of a MSc in the subject area of economic policy, applied economics, or environmental economics is compulsory. Candidates are expected to have previous experience in conducting research-related activities, gained during either the Ph.D. or relevant working experience. Study or work periods abroad are highly valued. Proficiency (C1) in English is mandatory and knowledge of Italian is valued positively.

The ideal candidate

  • is familiar with topics in environmental economics;
  • is interested in deepening the knowledge of topics related to the functioning of financial markets;
  • has solid quantitative background in statistics and econometrics, normally acquired with advanced postgraduate courses;
  • is highly committed in developing a research project;
  • can work independently.
