Position for a junior researcher in Environmental Economics

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) is looking for a qualified and motivated junior researcher to fill a position in the field of environmental economics and policy. The candidate will join the team working in the area of “Society and sustainability” (SAS) a research program aimed at deepening the knowledge on the topic of societal changes needed to enhance the climate change mitigation and adaptation capacity. The research aims at contributing to the understanding of the benefits for the society and the business sectors of the core aspects of circular economy, including the re-use and the recirculation of materials, more efficient production processes, and business model leveraging on the sharing of goods and services.

FEEM has strong ties with a worldwide network of research institutions engaged in environmental research and provide excellent opportunities to focus on research and disseminate results in international conferences and stakeholders’ events.

The selected applicant will be based in Milan (Italy) and will work alongside experienced researchers on topics related to policy analysis in four main areas of investigation: (a) Assess the state-of-the-art and global trends of the pathway to circular economy transformation, downscaling the implications of this transformation to region-specific and sector-specific contexts; (b) Develop data-driven empirical approaches to more precisely quantify the economic benefits in terms of value added and employment of the circular transformation; (c) Understand the potential of the different sectors of economic activities on both the supply (production and use of material) and demand (consumption, reuse and recycling) sides to contribute to the circular economy; (d) Provide a roadmap and action agenda to identify sectors and instruments with the highest potential to boost the transition to circular economy grounding on the analysis of the local, context-specific, information.

The candidate will participate in conferences and workshops and is expected to contribute to dissemination activities by also writing short articles and blog posts.

The job assignment is expected to begin in as soon as possible. Gross salary is competitive and will be based on qualification and experience.


A background in quantitative economics, as demonstrated by the achievement of a MSc in the subject area of economic policy, applied economics, or environmental economics is compulsory. Candidates are expected to have previous experience in conducting research-related activities, gained during either the Ph.D. or relevant working experience. Study or work periods abroad are highly valued. Proficiency (C1) in English is mandatory and knowledge of Italian is valued positively.

The ideal candidate

• Is familiar with topics in environmental economics, especially those related to green and circular economy;
• has solid quantitative background in statistics and econometrics, normally acquired with advanced postgraduate courses;
• is highly committed in developing a research project;
• can work independently.
