Climate Change

The accumulation of large amounts of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere is raising the global temperature and transforming climate patterns, with negative and potentially irreversible implications for ecological, social and economic stability worldwide. Climate change is a global challenge that does not respect national borders. It requires solutions that need to be coordinated at the international level to help countries move toward low-carbon economies and successfully adapt to unavoidable impacts, while pursuing a development which is sustainable and equitable.

FEEM develops and applies innovative modeling tools and instruments to analyse the costs and benefits of solution-oriented approaches to mitigation policies. The aim is to limit or prevent greenhouse gas emissions and enhance activities that remove them from the atmosphere. The main economic sectors are taken into account, both in a near-term and in a long-term perspective. The sectors include energy, transport, industry, agriculture, forestry, waste management. The analysis also covers social factors such as behavioral mechanisms. 

FEEM also generates analytical insights and models to assess the vulnerability of socio-economic and natural systems to climate change, negative and positive consequences of climate change, and options for adapting to it. It also takes into consideration the inter-relationship between vulnerability, adaptation and sustainable development. The assessed information is considered by sectors (water resources; ecosystems; food & forests; coastal systems; industry; human health) and regions.
