The Energy Scenarios and Policy FEEM Press series publishes the output of the Energy and Scenarios and Policy (ESP) research programme of Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei. The ESP programme aims to carry out interdisciplinary, scientifically sound, prospective and policy-oriented applied research, targeted at political and business decision makers. This aim is achieved through an integrated quantitative and qualitative analysis of energy scenarios and policies. This innovative and interdisciplinary approach puts together the major factors driving the change in global energy dynamics (i.e. technology, economy, geopolitics and sociological aspects). The ESP programme applies this methodology to a wide range of issues (energy demand and supply, infrastructures, financing, market analyses, socio-economic impacts of energy policies) that are explored from economic, geopolitical and institutional perspectives.

The current energy situation in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries is characterised by a rapid increase of energy demand, low energy efficiency and low domestic energy prices due to universal energy subsidies. In short, the current energy situation does not appear sustainable and poses several risks to the prospects of socio-economic development of the region. The Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei and Bruegel organized on 31 May – 1 June, 2016 an high-level and closed-door brainstorming workshop to analyse this situation: the ‘Euro-Mediterranean Energy Talks’. This FEEM Press summarizes the key results of this initiative, which not only looked at the current situation but also moved investigated how to formulate a new Euro-Mediterranean energy cooperation scheme to enhance the sustainability of the regional energy system.
